The Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap was instituted by (or given by Lord Shiva to) Rishi Markandeya. This Jaap was used to save the life of Chandra Dev when he was cursed by King Daksh. It is one of the most powerful Jaaps recited in the Vedas and it houses the power of Lord Shiva and can resolve any problem. It is an intergration of three Hindi words i.e. "Maha" which means great, "Mrityun" means death and "Jaya" stands for victory which turns into victory over death.
